Dora Maar was a French painter and photographer, known for her association with the Surrealist movement. Born in Argentina, she moved to Paris in 1926 and studied painting and photography. She became a successful photographer in the late 1920s, working with Pierre Kéfer, Brassaï, and Emmanuel Sougez. She was also a member of the Surrealist group and produced many portraits of fellow members, as well as innovative photomontages. She was a passionate and engaged intellectual and became the mistress of Louis Chavance and Georges Bataille. She is best known for her relationship with Pablo Picasso, who she met in 1936. She became his muse and documented the creation of his painting Guernica. He also encouraged her to return to painting and she produced portraits and still lifes in a cubist style.
